Kampala, Uganda: Ugandan football has been plunged into mourning following the death of SC Villa captain David Owori, who succumbed to injuries sustained during an attack by suspected thugs near his home in Makindye.
The Uganda Premier League record champions confirmed Owori’s passing in a statement released on Wednesday, saying the defender died while receiving treatment at Case Clinic.
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the untimely passing of our captain, David Owori, who had been receiving treatment at Case Clinic following an attack by suspected thugs. Our deepest condolences and prayers are with his family,” SC Villa said.

Hours before confirming the tragic news, the club’s Public Relations Officer Asan Kasingye had disclosed that Owori was attacked at around 8:00pm on Tuesday by unknown assailants near his residence in Makindye.
“Our Captain David Owori was attacked last night near his home in Makindye at around 8pm by unknown thugs. He’s critically injured and admitted at Case Clinic. Our President will be addressing the press about this developing story. Get well soon son. Our prayers,” Kasingye posted on X.
Despite efforts by medical personnel at Case Clinic, Owori later succumbed to his injuries.
SC Villa lose inspirational leader
Owori’s death is a devastating blow to SC Villa, where he had established himself as one of the club’s most dependable players and inspirational leaders.
The experienced right-back captained the Jogoos to the 2023/24 Uganda Premier League title, ending the club’s 20-year wait for a league championship and securing a record-extending 17th league crown.
Widely respected for his discipline, consistency and leadership on and off the pitch, Owori enjoyed two spells at SC Villa and was regarded as one of the Uganda Premier League’s finest defenders.
His commitment to the club earned him admiration from teammates, coaches and supporters alike, making him one of the most influential figures in Villa’s recent resurgence.
Owori’s passing has sent shockwaves through Uganda’s football fraternity, with tributes expected from fellow clubs, players, officials and fans who remember him for his professionalism and dedication to the game.
SC Villa are scheduled to face Maroons FC in the return leg of the FUFA Super 8 at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo on Friday, a fixture that will now be overshadowed by the loss of their captain.
Midfielder Andrew Okumu is expected to lead the team in Owori’s absence.
Police had not yet issued an official statement regarding the attack by press time.
