Kampala, Uganda: Former Uganda Cranes captain Emmanuel Arnold Okwi has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 33, drawing the curtain on a distinguished career that established him as one of Uganda’s finest footballers.
Okwi made the announcement on Tuesday through his social media platforms, saying the time had come to step away from competitive football after years of memorable moments on and off the pitch.
“After many unforgettable years on the pitch, the time has come for me to say goodbye to professional football,” part of his statement read.
The former national team captain described the decision as one of the most difficult he has ever made, saying football had shaped his life far beyond being a profession.
“This has been one of the hardest decisions of my life because football has been more than just a career. It has been my passion, my purpose and a dream I have been blessed to live every single day,” he said.
Okwi said representing Uganda at the highest level remains the greatest honour of his career, describing every opportunity to wear the Uganda Cranes jersey as a privilege.
“Representing my country, wearing the Uganda Cranes jersey and captaining our national team has been the greatest honour of my career. Those moments will forever remain the proudest of my life,” he said.
An Illustrious Football Career
During a professional career spanning nearly two decades, Okwi featured for several clubs across Uganda and abroad, earning admiration for his pace, goal-scoring ability and leadership qualities.
He enjoyed successful spells with SC Villa, Sports Club Simba of Tanzania, Young Africans (Yanga SC), Étoile Sportive du Sahel in Tunisia, SønderjyskE in Denmark, Al Ittihad Alexandria in Egypt, Erbil SC in Iraq, Kiyovu Sports in Rwanda and most recently KCCA FC.
On the international stage, Okwi became one of Uganda’s most influential forwards, playing a key role in the Cranes’ qualification for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which ended the country’s 39-year absence from the continental tournament.
He also represented Uganda at the 2019 AFCON in Egypt and captained the national team for several years.
Widely regarded as one of Uganda’s all-time leading goal scorers, Okwi leaves behind a legacy built on consistency, professionalism and commitment to the national team.
In his farewell message, he thanked every club that entrusted him with an opportunity to play, as well as the coaches, teammates, opponents and supporters who accompanied him throughout his journey.
“To every club that gave me an opportunity, every coach who believed in me, every teammate who fought alongside me, every opponent who challenged me and every fan who supported me through the highs and lows, thank you. You made this journey worthwhile.”
Although he is retiring from playing, Okwi assured football lovers that he is not walking away from the game entirely.
He revealed that the next chapter of his life will focus on giving back to football by supporting the development of young talent and contributing to the growth of the sport.
“While my playing days come to an end, my love for football never will. I look forward to the next chapter and to giving back to the game that has given me everything by helping inspire and develop the next generation.”
Okwi’s retirement marks the end of one of the most decorated careers in Ugandan football, with many fans expected to remember him as one of the country’s greatest-ever strikers and captains.
