Tororo, Uganda: Police in Tororo District have arrested 19 suspects during an intelligence-led operation targeting housebreaking, burglary, motorcycle theft, phone and bag snatching, drug abuse and other criminal activities within Tororo Municipality.
The operation was conducted on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, by the territorial police under Tororo Central Police Station, according to Bukedi South Regional Police Spokesperson IP Mugwe Johnson Moses.
Police said the operation targeted identified crime hotspots, including Corner along the Malaba–Jinja Road, the Bison area, Lions Children’s Park, video halls and unfinished buildings, where suspected criminals were allegedly using as hideouts and meeting points.
During the operation, officers recovered several exhibits, including suspected narcotic substances, khat (Catha edulis) leaves, slashers, metal pipes and other implements believed to be used in housebreaking and related offences.
Police identified the arrested suspects as Muzamiru Ziraba, Okware Patrick, Ibrahim Ibrahim, Onyango Emmanuel, Wankha Peter, Onyango Richard, Malinga Stephen, Owori Joseph, Mucherure Joab, Salimu Hazard, Oloka Eridad, Owino Michael, Ochari Emmanuel, Ering Author, Angosa David, Mukisa Denis, Mafabi Simon, Asumani Julius and Othieno Gerald.
According to police, the suspects are being investigated for offences including possession of suspected narcotic drugs, attempted commission of a felony and being armed in public.
The suspects remain in police custody as detectives and Crime Intelligence personnel continue screening, interrogation and profiling to establish their alleged involvement in criminal activities.
Police also said the recovered exhibits will undergo further forensic analysis, while investigators seek to establish whether any of the suspects could be linked to previously reported criminal cases in Tororo District.
According to IP Mugwe, case files will be compiled and forwarded to the Resident State Attorney upon completion of investigations for legal guidance and possible prosecution.
He said the security situation in Tororo District remains calm and stable but warned that police would continue carrying out intelligence-led operations to dismantle criminal networks and enhance public safety.
IP Mugwe further appealed to members of the public to continue cooperating with security agencies by providing timely information that can help prevent crime and support ongoing investigations.
“We urge members of the public to continue working closely with the police by sharing information that can help prevent crime and maintain law and order. Similar intelligence-led operations will continue across the district,” he said.
