Namutumba, Uganda: Police in Namutumba District have arrested three people accused of organising and participating in an unlawful protest against the outcome of the recently concluded LC I elections.
The suspects have been identified as Isabirye Faruku, who police describe as the alleged leader of the group, Walugada Moses, and Isabirye Moses.
According to the Busoga East Regional Police Spokesperson, ASP Michael Kasadha, the incident occurred on Tuesday, August 5, 2026, at around 10:30 am in Bulogo Village, Namutumba North Ward, Namutumba Town Council.
Police said the demonstrators, believed to be supporters of Isabirye Faruku, were marching from Nakalokwe Church of Uganda to the Electoral Commission offices in Namutumba Town Council.
Faruku had contested for the LC I Chairperson position but lost to Muwite Moses in the recently concluded village elections.
According to police, the group was chanting slogans and beating drums while alleging that the District Returning Officer had declared the wrong winner.
“They were chanting and drumming, alleging that the District Returning Officer declared the wrong winner,” ASP Kasadha said.
The District Police Commander (DPC) for Namutumba, SP Byansi Muhamed, together with a team of officers, responded to the scene and attempted to calm the demonstrators and prevent the situation from escalating.
However, police said the crowd allegedly turned violent and began throwing stones at officers. To restore order and protect both the Electoral Commission offices and members of the public, police discharged warning shots into the air before dispersing the demonstrators.
During the operation, officers impounded two Bajaj Boxer motorcycles, registration numbers UFB 268F and UFX 343J, which investigators allege were used to mobilise participants for the demonstration.
The three suspects are currently detained at Central Police Station (CPS) Namutumba on allegations of inciting violence, registered under SD REF 35/05/08/2026.
Police said investigations into the incident are ongoing.
