Kampala, Uganda: The Police in Kampala Metropolitan South have arrested four suspected armed robbers and recovered a rifle believed to have been used in a string of aggravated robberies across Kampala Metropolitan and other parts of the country following intelligence-led investigations.
According to the Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the arrests followed investigations into two aggravated robberies reported in Entebbe Police Division on June 1 and August 3, 2026, which detectives established were carried out by the same criminal gang.
“The first incident occurred at Buyinja Trading Centre, Nkumba Ward, Katabi Town Council, Wakiso District, where three armed men, one dressed in military attire, attacked a sales manager of a distribution company, fired two shots in the air, assaulted her, and stole approximately UGX 24 million before fleeing on a motorcycle,” Owoyesigyire said in a Thursday statement.
“Scene investigators recovered two cartridges; investigations linked the firearm to five previous robberies within Kampala Metropolitan and four others outside the region,” he added.
The gang allegedly struck again on August 3 at Kasenyi, Bendegere Village, during the offloading of goods from a truck.
“On 3rd August 2026, the same group attacked a shop in Kasenyi, Bendegere Village, during the offloading of goods from a truck. The suspects fired one shot, threatened the cashier with a knife, stole cash, and escaped on a motorcycle,” Mr Owoyesigyire stated.
Investigators later traced the motorcycle used in the robbery, leading to a joint operation coordinated by the Regional Police Commander (RPC) Kampala Metropolitan South and the District Police Commander (DPC) Jinja City.
The suspects were intercepted in Ngogwe, Buikwe District, as they allegedly attempted to return to Kampala.
According to Mr Owoyesigyire, the suspects confessed to the two robberies under investigation and admitted involvement in several other armed robberies committed across Kampala Metropolitan, Eastern Uganda and the Albertine region.
He said the suspects subsequently led investigators to Ngando Village in Mukono District, where officers recovered a rifle loaded with 15 rounds of live ammunition believed to have been used in the robberies.
The four suspects remain in police custody pending scene reconstruction and subsequent court proceedings, while detectives continue pursuing other members of the alleged criminal network.
ASP Owoyesigyire said investigations are ongoing as police intensify efforts to dismantle violent criminal gangs operating within Kampala Metropolitan and neighbouring regions.
“Kampala Metropolitan Police South remains committed to dismantling violent criminal gangs through intelligence-led operations and strong inter-agency coordination,” Owoyesigyire said.
“We urge the public to remain vigilant, promptly report suspicious persons or activities, and continue supporting police with timely information to prevent and combat crime,” he added, emphasizing that efforts to trace and arrest additional suspects linked to the gang are ongoing.
