Kampala, Uganda: SC Villa have announced the permanent retirement of David Owori’s iconic No. 15 jersey, ensuring that no player will ever wear the shirt again in honour of the club’s late captain.
The record Uganda Premier League champions confirmed the decision on Thursday as tributes continued to pour in following Owori’s death on Wednesday after he succumbed to injuries sustained during an attack by suspected robbers in Kampala.
The club described the gesture as a lasting tribute to one of its most influential leaders, whose contribution both on and off the pitch helped shape a memorable chapter in SC Villa’s history.
Owori, affectionately known as “Colgate”, rejoined the Jogoos for a second spell in 2023 and quickly became a central figure in the squad. As captain, he inspired SC Villa to the 2023/24 Uganda Premier League title, ending the club’s 20-year wait for league glory and delivering a record-extending 17th championship.
Renowned for his versatility, tactical intelligence and leadership qualities, Owori excelled as both a right-back and midfielder during his time at Villa. His impressive performances also earned him appearances for the Uganda Cranes, while his influence at the club saw SC Villa extend his contract until January 2027.
Retiring a player’s jersey number is one of the highest honours a football club can bestow, reserved for individuals whose legacy transcends their achievements on the field.
