Iganga, Uganda: Iganga District has secured 100 degree bursaries annually for local students after LCV Chairperson Governor Shabiru Isabirye Kalulu signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Team University.
Under the partnership, Team University will provide 100 bursaries every academic year exclusively for degree programmes in Arts and Sciences. The university will also offer additional bursaries for postgraduate, diploma and certificate programmes.
Students admitted under the scheme will have the option of studying at either Team University’s Iganga campus or its main campus in Kampala.
The MoU was signed on Monday as the university’s August intake gets underway, with district leaders describing the partnership as a major boost for students struggling to meet tuition costs.
The signing was witnessed by members of the Iganga District Executive and Kiiza Wahabu, representing Team University.
Kalulu said the partnership fulfils his manifesto commitment to prioritise education and expand access to higher education for young people in the district.
“No qualifying student from Iganga should be left behind because of school fees. I call upon all parents and students across the district to come to my office and pick application forms.”
He said the bursaries would be distributed fairly across the district to ensure that students from all sub-counties benefit from the programme.
“The bursaries will be shared equally among all sub-counties in the district so that every area benefits,” Kalulu said.
The LCV chairperson encouraged eligible students and parents to take advantage of the opportunity and apply for the available places.
Kiiza said Team University was pleased to partner with Iganga District, describing education as a key driver of community development.
“We are proud to partner with Iganga District. Education transforms communities, and Team University is ready to walk this journey with the people of Iganga to ensure no talent goes to waste,” Wahabu said.
The partnership is expected to reduce the financial burden on families while increasing access to university education for students from across Iganga.
Education stakeholders in the district have welcomed the initiative, saying the bursaries could help more students continue their education after secondary school and increase the number of graduates from the district.
The arrangement also comes at a time when the cost of higher education remains a major challenge for many families, making scholarship opportunities an important avenue for students who qualify but face financial constraints.
