Kiryandongo, Uganda: Kigumba Secondary School has credited its outgoing Board of Governors for contributing to infrastructure development, enrolment growth and improved confidence among parents, as a new board takes over leadership of the institution.
Speaking during the handover ceremony between the outgoing and incoming boards, Headteacher Moses Mayanja said the outgoing team had played an important role in guiding the school’s development and supporting key projects.
Among the achievements was the mobilisation for the construction of eight classrooms under the Uganda Secondary Education Expansion Project, USEEP, as well as improvements to the girls’ dormitory.
Mayanja said the board also provided strategic guidance on discipline and staff welfare, helping strengthen the learning and working environment at the school.
Outgoing Board of Governors Chairperson Julius Balikagira said the board developed a school development plan to guide projects and ensure resources were directed towards priority areas.
During its tenure, the school operated a budget of about Shs1.9 billion, making planning, oversight and accountability central to the board’s work.
Balikagira said the school’s growth was also reflected in enrolment, with Ordinary Level numbers increasing from 923 to 1,178 students. Advanced Level enrolment, meanwhile, rose from one student to 135.
The increase in learner numbers has, however, created additional pressure on classrooms, accommodation, staffing and other facilities.
To address some of these challenges, the board lobbied Kiryandongo District Local Government for a deep borehole and supported the acquisition of a standby generator, public address system and 28 computers.
The board also launched a fundraising initiative for a school bus, under which each student is expected to contribute Shs10,000 per term.
Balikagira urged the incoming board to maintain strong working relationships with parents, teachers, students and Kiryandongo District Local Government.
He identified the limited number of teachers on the government payroll as one of the key challenges affecting the school’s academic performance and called for continued efforts to address the staffing gap.
Incoming Board of Governors Chairperson Cathebert Asaba commended the outgoing team for laying a foundation for the school’s growth and said the new leadership would build on the gains already made.
He called on board members to remain committed to serving the institution and supporting its continued development.
Kiryandongo District Education Officer Rev. Edward Kiirya challenged the new board to uphold the legacy of its predecessor and work closely with school management and other stakeholders.
The transition comes as Kigumba Secondary School seeks to translate its growing enrolment and expanding infrastructure into stronger academic outcomes.
