Namutumba, Uganda: Residents of Kasodo Bubinga LC1 Village in Liwanyi Sub-county, Busiki North Constituency, are celebrating after receiving a new borehole donated by Woman Member of Parliament Betty Nakisita Mpongo.
For years, residents said they struggled to access clean and safe water, forcing many families to rely on stagnant water sources and wells also used by animals. The new borehole is expected to ease that burden and improve access to safe water for households in the village.
Speaking during the handover, Nakisita said the intervention was in response to the community’s appeals for clean water and was aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of residents.
“I have heard your cry for clean water. No one should continue drinking stagnant water in this modern era. This borehole is my commitment to you that I will continue to address your basic needs,” Nakisita said.
She said her office would continue lobbying government and other partners for improved service delivery in Busiki North, particularly access to safe water.
“Water is life. My office will continue to work with the government and other partners to ensure that every village in Namutumba gets access to safe water,” she said.
Nakisita urged residents to take responsibility for maintaining the facility and handle minor mechanical issues where possible. She pledged to support the community in the event of major breakdowns and asked residents to report such cases to her office or the District Water Office.
Residents and local leaders welcomed the intervention, saying the borehole would spare them from the long-standing challenge of collecting water from unsafe sources.
Paul Matyama, one of the residents, said the community had endured years of drinking unsafe water and welcomed the new facility as a major relief.
“We thank Hon. Nakisita for the water programme. We have been drinking unsafe water, and her lobbying has helped us,” Matyama said.
Another resident, Scovia Namukasa, said some community members previously shared water sources with animals, raising concerns about the safety of the water consumed by households.
Kasodo Bubinga LC1 Chairperson Batema Saul said the village had been badly affected by the lack of access to clean water and thanked the MP for responding to the community’s needs.
“Our village was lacking clean water. We have been drawing water from wells where animals also drink, and this has been putting the lives of my people at risk,” Batema said.
“With this intervention, I believe our people will now have access to safe water and will no longer face the same challenges.”
The borehole is expected to serve residents of Kasodo Bubinga and surrounding households, with local leaders pledging to work with the community to ensure the facility is properly maintained.
