Sheena Ruparelia: The woman shaping the future of the wealthy Ruparelia Group

As a director at the family-owned conglomerate, Sheena is involved in overseeing major investments and developments across Uganda’s hospitality and property sectors, positioning her among the next generation of business leaders contributing to the group’s continued expansion.

In Summary: As a director at the Ruparelia Group, Sheena Ruparelia is playing a growing role in shaping the conglomerate’s hospitality and real estate investments, overseeing landmark developments and contributing to the family’s vision of expanding its business footprint in Uganda.

Kampala, Uganda — Sheena Ruparelia is emerging as an important figure in Uganda’s business landscape, taking an increasingly prominent role in the hospitality and real estate operations of the Ruparelia Group as she builds on the entrepreneurial foundation established by her father, billionaire businessman, Dr Sudhir Ruparelia.

As a director at the family-owned conglomerate, Sheena is involved in overseeing major investments and developments across Uganda’s hospitality and property sectors, positioning her among the next generation of business leaders contributing to the group’s continued expansion.

Her professional journey reflects a combination of formal training, experience within the family business and increasing responsibility for some of its prominent commercial properties.

Educated at London’s City University, where she obtained a degree in Economics and Accountancy, Sheena began her career within the Ruparelia Group working as a cashier at the now-defunct Crane Bank.

She subsequently progressed into leadership, taking on responsibilities in the group’s hospitality and real estate divisions.

In an interview with a local publication, she explained that her primary responsibility involves overseeing the two divisions under the guidance of her father, Dr Sudhir Ruparelia, and fellow directors. “Since January 2017, I have been leading the operations and renovation of our iconic properties, such as Speke Resort, Kabira Country Club, and various other developments,” she said.

She also highlighted her involvement in the design and development of Speke Apartments Kitante, Tagore Living, Bukoto Living and Windsor House.

Speke Resort Convention Centre among major achievements

One of Sheena’s notable professional contributions has been her involvement in the construction of the Speke Resort Convention Centre at Munyonyo, a facility that has strengthened Uganda’s capacity to host major international conferences and diplomatic gatherings.

She said her role involved coordinating the project from design and procurement through implementation, working alongside consultants and contractors.

“One of my proudest achievements has been contributing to the construction of the Speke Resort Convention Centre, where my key role was to coordinate the project from design and procurement to implementation, working alongside a team of talented consultants and contractors,” she said.

Sheena revealed that she spent six months on-site supervising different aspects of the development to ensure its successful completion.

The convention centre subsequently hosted major international gatherings, including the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit and the G77+China Summit in January 2024, placing Uganda at the centre of significant diplomatic engagements.

For Sheena, the project represented more than a property development, demonstrating how private investment in hospitality infrastructure can support the country’s international profile and business tourism ambitions.

Major hospitality and real estate projects underway

Beyond her responsibilities in operations and marketing, Sheena is also involved in the group’s expanding portfolio of hospitality and property developments.

Among the projects she highlighted are a 600-bedroom expansion of Kabira Country Club, Phase One of Pearl Business Park, Paradise Island Resort, One10 Apartments for sale, Vista Naguru Apartments, 48 apartments in Naguru and the Pool Pavilion, an extension of the Speke Resort conference facilities.

She said the developments reflected the group’s commitment to quality, innovation and expanding Uganda’s hospitality and real estate sectors. “Each of these developments reflects our commitment to excellence and innovation in Uganda’s real estate and hospitality sectors.”

The projects span residential property, commercial real estate, hospitality and conference infrastructure, reflecting the group’s continued diversification. Their implementation is also expected to support economic activity through construction, professional services, property management and hospitality-related employment.

Leadership philosophy centred on innovation and empowerment

Sheena says her leadership approach is built around sustainable growth, continuous innovation and empowering employees.

She believes businesses must modernise their systems, strengthen operational standards and create collaborative working environments capable of responding to changing market conditions. “I believe in fostering a collaborative environment that enables us to modernise systems, enhance operational standards, and build a motivated team united by a shared sense of purpose,” she said.

She added that balancing established business values with innovation would be essential in sustaining the group’s competitiveness and long-term growth.

Beyond her corporate responsibilities, Sheena has expressed interest in community development and initiatives aimed at helping individuals realise their potential.

Through the Ruparelia Foundation, she has been associated with initiatives supporting education, women’s empowerment and sustainable development.

Her involvement reflects the family’s broader philanthropic interests, which extend beyond commercial investment into social and community programmes.

Building on Sudhir Ruparelia’s entrepreneurial legacy

Sheena’s business journey is closely linked to the entrepreneurial story of her father, Dr Sudhir Ruparelia, founder of the Ruparelia Group and one of Uganda’s prominent business figures.

Sudhir returned to Uganda in 1985 after spending years abroad following the expulsion of Asians under Idi Amin’s government.

He returned with approximately $25,000 in savings and gradually built a diversified business empire with interests spanning real estate, hospitality, education, financial services and other sectors.

Over several decades, his investments have contributed to the development of major commercial properties, hotels, educational institutions and other enterprises across Uganda.

His business journey has also attracted national and international recognition, including the Golden Jubilee Presidential Medal and recognition by Forbes among Africa’s wealthiest individuals.

As Sheena assumes greater responsibilities within the group, her role represents an important part of the family’s generational business transition.

Through her involvement in major developments, operational management and community initiatives, she is contributing to the continued evolution of an enterprise built over several decades.

Her journey illustrates the growing role of women in corporate leadership and the importance of preparing the next generation to sustain and expand established businesses.

For the Ruparelia Group, the challenge ahead will be to preserve the entrepreneurial foundations established by its founder while adapting to changing markets, technologies and investment opportunities.
