In Summary: Police in Kamuli District are investigating the suspected mob murder of a 45-year-old man who was allegedly stoned to death by residents of Kagumba Sub-county over claims that he stole three pigs. No arrests had been confirmed by press time, as police called on the public to reject mob justice and report suspected crimes to authorities.

Kamuli, Uganda — Police have launched investigations into the suspected mob murder of a 45-year-old man who was allegedly stoned to death by residents of Kagumba Sub-county in Kamuli District over allegations of stealing three pigs.

The deceased has been identified as Lubaale Fred, a resident of Busamu Zone, Kiige Parish, Kagumba Sub-county.

According to Busoga North Regional Police Spokesperson SSP SK Lubega, the incident occurred on Tuesday, October 28, 2026, following allegations that three pigs belonging to Kisame Sanon had been stolen.

Preliminary police findings indicate that at around 8:00am, the area LC I Chairperson, Okurut James, 45, received information about the alleged theft from his vice chairperson, Ikuluba Francis.

The owner of the pigs subsequently sought police assistance, including the deployment of a sniffer dog to help trace the suspected thief.

Police said the dog led officers to the deceased’s home, but Lubaale allegedly fled, prompting members of the community to pursue him. At about 5:00pm, the residents reportedly caught up with him and stoned him to death.

By press time, police had not confirmed any arrests but said investigations were ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the killing.

SSP Lubega condemned the incident, warning that allegations of theft do not justify mob violence or the killing of a suspect. “We strongly condemn mob justice and remind the public that no suspicion or allegation of theft justifies taking the law into one’s own hands,” he said.

The police spokesperson urged members of the public to report suspected crimes to law enforcement agencies and allow investigations and the courts to determine the facts.

Police warn against mob justice ahead of festive season

Police also cautioned the public to remain vigilant as the festive season approaches, noting that animal theft cases tend to increase during this period.

Livestock owners were advised to keep their animals in properly enclosed structures, strengthen security at night, maintain records and identifiable markings, and promptly report suspicious activity to police or local authorities.

The incident highlights the dangers of mob justice, in which people accused of wrongdoing are subjected to violence without the opportunity for a lawful investigation and trial. Lubega appealed to residents to cooperate with security agencies and refrain from taking the law into their own hands.
