In Summary: The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) this week visited three secondary schools under the second phase of the WIPO K-12 Students’ Innovation Mentorship Programme, guiding learners to improve their inventions and understand how to protect their innovations through intellectual property rights ahead of the final competition.

Kampala, Uganda — The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) has intensified efforts to nurture innovation among secondary school learners through mentorship visits to three schools under the second phase of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) K-12 Students’ Innovation Mentorship Programme.

The URSB team visited Ndejje Senior Secondary School, Comboni College in Lira, and Dr Obote College, Boroboro, where students presented their projects for assessment and technical guidance ahead of the programme’s final competition.

The visits were led by URSB Assistant Commissioner for Traditional Knowledge, Mr Kafunjo Twinomujuni, who guided learners on improving their innovations and developing practical solutions to challenges identified in their communities.

According to URSB, the mentorship sessions involved reviewing students’ projects, providing technical advice and helping participants strengthen their ideas before the final stage of the competition.

The programme also introduces learners to intellectual property protection, helping them understand how innovative ideas and creations can be protected from unauthorised use.

Through the initiative, URSB seeks to encourage creativity among young people while building awareness of intellectual property rights and their importance in innovation and enterprise development.

The WIPO K-12 Students’ Innovation Mentorship Programme is designed to introduce school-going children to innovation and intellectual property concepts, encouraging them to develop ideas that can be transformed into practical solutions.

URSB said the mentorship initiative is part of its broader efforts to build an innovation culture among young Ugandans and equip learners with knowledge that can support future entrepreneurship, research and technological development.
