KISORO: An 18-year-old teenager was on Monday morning shot in both legs by a police guard at Kisoro District headquarters as he attempted to steal machinery from one of the stores in the department.
The suspect identified as Turinayo Gerald is a resident of Mikingo village in the Southern Division in Kisoro Municipality.
Steven Ongwang the acting District Police Commander said the suspect was struck by three bullets while his other colleagues escaped.
Ongwang applauded police constable Benon Niringiye for immobilizing the suspect.
Gerald is said to have attacked the district store with two friends only identified as Zahura from Mikingo village and Bright from Mutolere in Nyakabande village.
He told police that their intention was to steal scrap metal for sale in order to get capital to add to his business of hawking eggs.
James Karamira, the Kisoro district Engineer said that thieves have several times disrupted the works department and many metallic items including iron sheets, iron metals, metallic windows and doors, batteries have been stolen.
He noted that he has on several occasions blamed the loss of these items on his workers.
He called upon the government to relocate the Batwa in Mikingo because they are the ones who harbor the thieves.
Meanwhile, the Batwa around the area denounced Turinayo Gerald and said that he has never lived with them.
