EC Releases Programme for Conducting By-Elections in Local Government Positions

KAMPALA, UGANDA: The Uganda Electoral Commission (EC) has released a programme that will be followed to conduct By-Elections for Local Government Councils, including Special Interest Groups (SIGs) in electoral areas across the country.

The different Local Government councils include; City/District Chairpersons and Councillors; Municipality and City Division Chairpersons and Councillors; Councillors representing Special Interest Groups to District/City Local Government Councils; and Sub County/Town/Municipal Division Chairpersons and Councillors.

The development was confirmed by EC Chairman Justice Simon Byabakama in a Press Release dated Tuesday, October 05, 2021.

“The Electoral Commission has approved the following programme for purposes of conducting by-elections for Local Government Councils, including Special Interest Groups (SIGs) in electoral areas across the country, where vacancies exist,” Byabakama announced.

According to the released programme, Nomination of candidates at respective district headquarters will take place starting 29th November this year, while campaigns are set to kick off on 02 until 14th December 2021.

By-elections will be held on 15th December 2021.

Byabakama specified that Tallying of results for Elections of District Chairperson (Kayunga) & other Local Government Councils will be on December 16, 2021.
