HOIMA, UGANDA: Residents of Mparangasi village in Kyabigambire Sub county in Hoima District have expressed concern over increased chimpanzee attacks to their children in the area.
The concern was raised after a five-year old boy identified as Jonah Atuhairwe was bitten by a chimpanzee on Tuesday afternoon in Mparangasi village leaving him with severe injuries on the stomach.
Julius Wamani a grand father to Jonah told our reporter today that his grandchild was caught by the animal as he was going to fetch water at around 12pm with the collegues who ran back home and later alerted a man who was digging near to the water source.
“After his alert, he ran very fast to the water source and rescued Jonah from the chimpanzee but unfortunately, he where the chimpanzee had already bitten the young boy on the stomach and the intestines were outside” Wamani adds.
According to Wamani, Jonah was later transported to Hoima town and admitted to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital for where he was operated last evening.
“We are currently at Hoima RRH seeking for medication but we are financially unstable and therefore we are asking the Uganda World life Authority (UWA) for financial support”. Wamani.
According to the residents, this is the second time chimpanzees attacking children in Mparangasi village in a three weeks time which has scared them off.
In the Mid of November this year, another baby was also by the chimpanzee which climbed the tree with the baby and after getting threats from the residents, the chimpanzee left the baby falling down which caused injuries and is currently admitted at Hoima RRH.
At time of this report, UWA had not yet issued any comment about the matter.
