KAMPALA, UGANDA: The Central Bank of Uganda (BoU) has said the demise of its late Governor Prof. Emmanuel Mutebile-Tumusiime doesn’t affect banknotes bearing his signature, refuting social media reports and public concern over the legal tender.

The clarification by the central bank follows public speculation and misinformation circulating on social media claiming that the banknotes bearing the late Mutebile’s signature have expired following his death.

According to BOU, the change of the office bearer or the demise of the person who signed banknotes as Governor does not in any way affect the validity or legal status of the banknotes he or she signed.

In the February 2, 2022 letter, the Central Bank noted that the current banknotes remain legal tender until determined otherwise by the Bank of Uganda, which is the only lawful authority entrusted with the mandate to issue currency banknotes.
