Man killed in attempt to burn Masanafu police station

Police said investigations into the matter have commenced to establish the attacker’s motive and whether he is part of the gang that has been attacking Police stations or not.

KAMPALA, UGANDA: The territorial police at Old Kampala are investigating an incident of attempted arson on the Masanafu police post which left the attacker dead after he was shot and injured in the aftermath of the attack.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Mr Luke Owoyesigyire, the incident occurred yesterday (Tuesday) night at about 23: 50hrs at the police station located in Masanafu, Rubaga division in Kampala.

“It is alleged that our officers were manning the station for the night shift when they noticed a man approaching with a 2-litre water bottle containing an unknown substance,” ASP Owoyesigyire said in a police statement, adding when one of the officers then asked the man what was in the bottle and what had brought him to the Police station, he responded by pouring the substance and setting a fire at the station.

Owoyesigyire says the attacker, unfortunately, got burnt in the process and started running towards the officers, prompting one of them to shoot at him, and the fire was later put out by the responding officers.

He says the man was rushed to Mulago Hospital for treatment, where he later succumbed to the injuries sustained from both the shooting and burning at Masanafu police station.

According to police, a team of investigation officers arrived at the scene and picked up the 2-liter bottle has been and exhibited it for analysis to ascertain the contents. The team also picked a matchbox he used to start the fire

Owoyesigyire noted that a photocopy of a National ID in the name of Kintu Charles Bazil and a mobile phone were recovered from the deceased and these will aid in the ongoing investigations.

“Investigations into the matter have commenced establishing the attacker’s motive and whether he is part of the gang that has been attacking Police stations or not,” he concluded.

The development comes at a time security services are hunting down assailants who have been attacking police stations across Uganda.
