Musician dead, four injured after thunderstorm hits Lango Radio

The deceased identified as Morris Olum, 23, alias “Great Boy” collapsed dead on the spot while on air in the studios of Lango Broadcasting Services (LBS) radio.

DOKOLO, UGANDA: At least one musician died instantly and four others got injured after a devastating thunderstorm hit Lango Broadcasting Services (LBS) radio in Dokolo town council, Dokolo district on Saturday evening.

The deceased identified as Morris Olum, 23, alias “Great Boy” collapsed dead on the spot while on air in the studios of Lango Broadcasting Services (LBS) radio.

LBS Station Manager Mr Fred Eladu in a statement on Saturday said the five victims were on-air at around 7:30 pm on Friday publicizing an upcoming musical show at the time of the incident.

“The on Air Studios at 90.3 LBS Radio in Dokolo Town Council on Saturday 25th March 2023 at around 7:30 pm was hit by thunderstorms that broke the broadcast antennas and parts of the mast, crashing into one of the studios and injuring five artists who were on air to publicise a musical show.”

Eladu said the four victims were all rushed to the nearby Dokolo Health Centre IV government hospital for medication where Olum was pronounced dead.

“Four of them had minor injuries and have since been discharged from the hospital to their homes. However, we learned with sadness that one person later succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment,” he said in a brief statement.

The station pledged to “contact and work with the family of the deceased throughout this difficult moment and will share more details later.”

“The management and staff of LBS heartily commiserate with the family and friends of the deceased,” the radio station added on Saturday night.
