AGAGO, UGANDA: Police in Agago district are investigating a murder by shooting after a UPDF soldier shot and killed a football coach in a tragic incident on Tuesday evening.

The soldier, identified as Private Mukanza Michelle attached to the Kokil army detachment under Labwordwong barracks fatally shot Omol Justin, 25, the head coach of Aguta United Football Club in Paimol Sub County, in Agago district, Northern Uganda.

The incident according to police reports occurred on Tuesday, May 31, 2023, at approximately 6:00 pm. when Omol was conducting a training session with his team at the Paimol Sub County playground.

It is alleged during the training session, the intoxicated soldier arrived and insisted on joining the game but Omol respectfully requested the soldier to take a rest and return at a later time.

However, in a fit of anger, the soldier stormed off to the barracks and returned armed with a gun, before he tragically shot Omol in both legs.

Immediate action was taken, and Omol was swiftly transported to Dr Ambrossoli Memorial Hospital Kalongo where he succumbed to his injuries at 8:00 pm.

Aswa River Region Police Spokesperson, David Ongom Mudong confirmed the incident and said that the soldier has been arrested and is currently held in custody at the 5th Division Army Barracks in Acol Pii.

Mudong denounced the soldier’s behaviour, emphasizing the unfortunate reality that instead of safeguarding citizens, an officer had become the perpetrator of violence against them.

The deceased’s body was taken to the Agago district hospital mortuary for a post-mortem as investigations into the murder case continue underway.
