Eight Chinese nationals arrested over illegal stay in Uganda

MUKONO, (UG): The enforcement team in the Immigration Office on Monday arrested eight (8) Chinese nationals over lack of valid work permits and illegal stay in the country.

The 8 nationals whose were netted from a stone quarry in Kyampisi, Kyabakadde in Mukono district according to a brief statement posted by the Immigration office via X (formerly Twitter).

“Our enforcement team has today arrested 8 Chinese Nationals found working illegally (without work permits) in a stone Quarry in Kyampisi, Kyabakadde, Mukono. They, like all illegal immigrants we routinely arrest, will be prosecuted as per the laws of Uganda,” reads a post.

The Immigration Spokesperson, Mr Simon Mundeyi said such operations on illegal immigrants will continue in earnest and advised “all foreigners to legalise their stay in the country by applying online at http://visas.Immigration.go.ug.”

It is not yet clear if when arraigned before the law the Chinese nationals will be deported back to their home country or be granted legal work permits after meeting the minimum requirements.

The Directorate of Citizenship Immigration which oversees the operations against illegal migrants offers a number of services among them border management, processing and issuing of visas, and processing and issuing of national ID and regional travel documents.
