Sudhir’s VCON wins Sh34bn mega contract for IUIU construction project

KAMPALA, UGANDA: VCON Construction (U) Limited, a prominent civil engineering firm and a subsidiary of the Ruparelia Group has been awarded a mega contract worth $9.1 million (UGX 34 billion) by the Islamic Development Bank to construct state-of-the-art infrastructure at Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) main campus in Mbale.

The construction project will involve VCON constructing a state-of-the-art Faculty of Engineering and a 500-bed hostel at the prestigious Islamic University in Mbale.

The contract for the project was signed last week (August 2, 2023), at the IUIU Kampala Campus in Kibuli in the presence of Vcon Directors represented by Dr Sudhir Ruparelia (chairman of the Ruparelia Group), and Mr Rajiv Ruparelia, the Group’s managing director, while IUIU was represented by Prof. Ismail Simbwa Gyagenda, the Principal of IUIU.

Prof. Gyagenda, speaking after the signing, emphasized the project’s overdue status and urged the contractor to adhere to the agreed-upon timeline, specifications, and standards for the project’s completion.

“This project is very important as science and technology is the driver of growth in e country and the entire world,” said Prof Gyagenda, before further urging the contractor to meet the agreed specifications and standards.

Dr Sudhir Ruparelia on behalf of VCON, the contractors assured the Islamic University that the project would be finished punctually while upholding high standards and quality. “Currently, our company has 11 ongoing construction projects and this is going to be added on with enough technical capacity,” Dr Sudhir said.

As per the contract terms, the completion of the project is anticipated within 15 months.
