Wakiso, (UG): The Police at Katwe Division in Kampala Metropolitan are actively investigating a case of aggravated robbery and murder in which three armed thugs were lynched by the mob after raiding a shop and shooting one of the workers before taking off with cash amounting to shs 20 million.
The harrowing incident occurred on Thursday, January 18, 2024, in Ndejje Kibutika Village, Makindye Ssabagabo Municipality, Wakiso District.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson, Mr Luke Owoyesigyire, preliminary findings indicate that on the fateful day at approximately 6 pm, three employees of Shana Distributors Ltd, Kikuubo identified as Galabuzi Haruna (driver), Babirye Patricia (salesperson), and Mfitumukiza Henry (offloader), were ambushed by armed assailants during their routine product distribution.
The assailants, demanding money, resorted to violence when met with hesitation from the workers.
“Despite warning shots, the assailants shot Babirye Patricia in the leg, subsequently taking a substantial amount of money, approximately 20 million Ugandan shillings, from the vehicle. The criminals fled on a motorcycle with registration UES 820K,” Mr Owoyesigyire stated.
“As the victims raised an alarm, a pursuit ensued, leading to the robbers abandoning the motorcycle. A group of local residents and riders in Namasuba apprehended the suspects, resulting in a confrontation. Tragically, two suspects succumbed to injuries at the scene, while another passed away upon arrival at Mulago Hospital,” Mr Owoyesigyire added.
Police identified the deceased as Bakka Mark and Ssemanda Brain from whom identification and voter cards were recovered, plus the alleged robbery weapon as evidence to help in ongoing investigations.
“Regrettably, the stolen cash has not been recovered, as it is believed to have been taken by members of the public during the confrontation,” police said.
DailyExpress understands that the injured victims are currently receiving urgent medical attention, and their detailed statements on the incident have been documented.
Owoyesigyire said police remain committed to providing further updates as the investigation unfolds and urged the public to stay calm as security operatives work towards ensuring justice for the affected persons.
“We urge the public to remain calm and cooperative as we work towards ensuring justice in this distressing matter,” he stated.
