Policeman killed in hit-and-run accident along Mbale-Kumi road

Mbale, (UG):- The Police at Mbale Central Division officers are in a sombre mood after one of their own was knocked dead by a yet-to-be-identified Trailer driver in a hit-and-run road accident on Thursday night.

The Elgon Region Police Spokesperson SP Rogers Taitika confirmed the report in a Friday police statement, identifying the deceased as Sgt Okwakol Benard, 42, who he said was knocked dead at around 1 am as he was travelling on a private motorcycle.

The accident occurred along Mbale-Kumi road at Y junction of Nabuyonga when the trailer driver was entering Mbale-Kumi road from Nabuyonga road and knocked the officer who was travelling on a motorcycle.

“The accident occurred at Y junction of Nabuyonga along Mbale-Kumi road. The late officer was riding a motorcycle Bajaj boxer registration number UED 274A towards Kumi direction. According to information The trailer allegedly knocked him when it was joining Mbale Kumi as it was coming from Nabuyonga road,” SP Taitika said while speaking to DailyExpress on Friday afternoon.

Mr Taitika added that Sgt Okwakol, who joined the Uganda Police Force in 2005, shall be laid to rest in his home district of Serere on Saturday, March 09, 2024. He praised him for his commitment to his work.

Meanwhile, Police have confirmed a hunt for the driver and the trailer which caused the accident and face the law, amidst condoling with the bereaved family for losing their dear one.

“We want to assure the public that the hunt is on to apprehend the driver and the vehicle that caused the accident, however, we convey our sincere condolences to the bereaved family for losing a loved one,” Taitika said.

By press time, the officer’s body was pending postmortem examination at Mbale City Mortuary, before handing it over to relatives for burial arrangements.
