UMSC boss, South Sudan Islamic Council discuss mutual cooperation to better Muslim communities

Juba, (South Sudan):- The Chairperson of Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) Prof. Dr. Muhamadi Lubega early this week paid a visit to South Sudan’s capital, Juba upon the invitation of H.E Sheikh Abdallah Baraj, the Secretary General of the South Sudan Islamic Council (aka HE the Mufti).

Prof Lubega was welcomed by the special envoy of H.E the Mufti of Uganda to South Sudan Sheikh Twaha Uthuman Musa and the Director General of Mahad institutions of South Sudan among other Muslim leaders. 

During his four-day official visit, the two leaders discussed enhancing the cooperation between the South Sudan Islamic Council and the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council and one of the key points of discussion was the formation or rejuvenation of the Union of Muslim Councils of East Africa to foster a stronger alliance among Islamic councils in the region in tandem with the strategic direction of the political East African Community.

Additionally, the leaders also discussed wide-ranging thematic areas for the advancement of the Ummah including but not limited to Education, Health, Zakat, Sharia, Socio-economic transformation, women and youth emancipation for the betterment of the Muslim communities in the two countries. 

During the meeting, Professor Lubega Muhamadi delivered a congratulatory message from H.E the Mufti of Uganda Dr Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje and the entire Muslim Community to the Secretary General of the South Sudan Islamic Council HE Sheik Abdallah Baraj upon his recent victorious elections to the same office that occurred in January 2024.

The meetings were attended by among others; Sheikh Jar-al-nabi Khamis Mursal, the Deputy Secretary-General of the South Sudan Islamic Council, Sheikh Juma Saeed Ali, the South Sudan Presidential Advisor on Muslim Affairs, several Muslim members of the South Sudan Parliament and the Chairman of the South Sudan Islamic Assembly. 

The UMSC Chairman capped his visit with a meeting with South Sudan’s 2nd Vice President in charge of the Social Services sector H.E Abdil Baggi.

This visit underscores the commitment of both parties to strengthen ties and work towards common goals for the advancement of Islamic affairs and the well-being of the people in the region as was earlier discussed between leaders of Islamic faith in the two countries.
