African Games 2023: Uganda Hippos into semi-final with victory over Senegal

Accra, (GH):- Uganda’s U-20 National Men’s Team; the Hippos cemented their spot in the semifinals of the men’s tournament with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Senegal at the ongoing African Games 2023 in Accra, Ghana.

Allan Oyirwoth emerged as the hero for Uganda, with his decisive goal proving to be the difference between the two sides.

The match kicked off with both teams displaying their prowess on the field, with Senegal, the 2015 tournament winners, looking to maintain their dominance. 

However, it was Uganda who seized the initiative early on, as Arafat Usama was fouled inside the box, resulting in a penalty for the Hippos in the 26th minute.

Oyirwoth stepped up to take the penalty, and although his initial shot was saved, he made no mistake with the rebound, putting Uganda ahead 1-0 in the 27th minute.

Despite Senegal’s relentless efforts to find an equalizer, Uganda’s defense held firm, ensuring their victory and progression to the semifinals.

This victory marks a historic moment for Uganda, as they secure their first semifinal appearance since 1999. 

Head coach Morley Byekwaso’s charges have displayed exceptional resilience and determination throughout the tournament, previously defeating Nigeria in the group stage to advance to the knockout rounds.

Uganda’s success against Senegal serves as a testament to their strength and potential in underage tournaments, reaffirming their status as a force to be reckoned with on the African football scene.
