Man, 30, jailed 20 years for raping 80-year-old grandmother

Jinja, (UG):- A 30-year-old man, married with two wives has been sentenced to 20 years in jail by Jinja High Court, for raping his 80-year-old grandmother.

Led by Justice Winfred Nabisinde, court convicted and sentenced Godfrey Lukiise after pleading guilty during a court hearing on Thursday, March 21, 2024, in Jinja City.

According to charge sheet presented before court by State prosecutor Lawrence Mukiibi, it is alleged that Lukiise committed the atrocity on September 14, 2022, then 28 years old and married to two wives with six children.

Court further heard that on the fateful day, Anna Kasakya, the victim was resting in her house at Lubani central village in Namagera town council, Jinja district, when her grandson bundled her with a cloth after boxing her and finally raped her.

Mr. Mukiibi said the victim’s daughter only identified as Migamba entered the house and found her mother in pain as Lukiise was in the act of raping the elderly woman. He added that Migamba alerted the neighbours with an alarm and they succeeded in apprehending him before escaping from the scene of the crime.

“The victim was 80 years old and vulnerable and his accused grandson had the duty to protect her from any form of harm, not to injure her. What he did was gruesome,” Mukiibi submitted. 

A medical examination, according to Mukiibi revealed that Lukiise was mentally okay and Kasakya was examined before receiving necessary treatment.

Meanwhile, Lukiise was among the applicants for a plea bargain at Kirinya prisons in Jinja city and on Thursday, the defence lawyer counsel Daniel Mudumbusi presented to court a plea bargain agreement signed by both sides, in which the sides agreed that the convict serves a 20-year prison sentence which Justice Nabisinde perused and approved.

The judge concurred and agreed to deduct the time Lukiise spent on remand (one year and five months) from his jail time meaning the convict will serve a sentence of eighteen years and seven months.
