Lira City, (UG):- The Bishop of Lira Diocese, Rt. Rev. Sanctus Lino Wanok has implored the people of Lango to embrace saving culture and cooperative groups to grow and combat the increasing rate of poverty in the region.

Bishop Wanok was speaking at the 3rd Annual General Meeting for Lira Diocese Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society Limited held at Lira Diocese Ordination Ground on Friday, 5th April 2024.

The Bishop who is also the patron of Lira Diocese Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society Limited noted that at this time no one should think of living alone in this world.

“Nowadays we have a mindset that I can grow alone, I eat alone and get profit alone. That cannot work. We have to join together. Cooperative is now taking over,” Bishop Wanok said.

“Even with the emergence of Owuwuk that are disturbing the city dweller shall come to pass once we embrace cooperating since there will be work for them,” he added.

Meanwhile, the new board chairman of Lira Diocese Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society, Caesar Omac Ario, appealed for more members to join the cooperative society as it is the only tool for development.

He also requested the members of the public to join the Cooperative in a bid to reduce household poverty. “Am asking you to work hard during this rainy season. Let us keep things which are a necessity at home, don’t be lazy because even the bible talks about no food for those who don’t work.”

“In the same way, we are appealing to you to work extra hard to support your family. Can you send children to school? Can you foot the medical bill? Don’t relax,” Omac Ario added.

Mr Cyprian Okello, the vice board chairperson of the cooperative says they are now undertaking different farming enterprises to create wealth and make Christian families remain self-reliant. He called for more support from the members for the development of the society and their own.

‘’Everyone should endeavor to engage themselves in Agriculture such as poultry, crop and animal production. All these enterprises bring in money and that money once we save as a cooperative it becomes an important tool for development which makes us stronger,’’ Okello explained.

Lira Diocese Multi-Purpose Cooperative Limited was conceived in 2019 by Rt. Rev. Sanctus Lino Wanok, the Bishop of Lira Diocese to empower Christian families to enable them to support their children while meeting other basic needs.
