Ugandans losing National IDs for utensils from Egyptian nationals

Kampala, (UG):- Police have identified multiple districts, including Kampala, Gulu, Fort Portal, Mpigi and Iganga as hotspots where residents are exchanging their national identity cards for utensils with Egyptian immigrants operating illegally in the country.

According to Mr Simon Mundeyi, the immigration spokesperson at the Internal Affairs Ministry, these illegal immigrants are reportedly using local agents to apprehend citizens unable to pay for the utensils provided in exchange for their national identity documents.

“These residents are relinquishing their national documents to foreigners, unaware of the potential repercussions, in exchange for items such as saucepans,” Mundeyi said during a media briefing at the Police headquarters in Naguru, Kampala on Monday, April 8, 2024..

He added that many Ugandans are ignorant about the potential repercussions of immigrants misusing their identity documents.

“The situation is currently evolving, with authorities working to address the alarming trend,” he said.
