Teachers, students injured as school bus veers off main road in Pallisa

Pallisa, (UG):- Traffic Police in eastern Uganda’s Pallisa District are investigating a serious accident involving a school bus from St Andrews SS Napak. The white ISUZU school bus with registration number UBC 623D was en route to Jinja for a Saturday tour when the incident occurred.

The accident took place at approximately 4:00 am in Kanyamatunga village along the Pallisa-Kumi Road. As the students and teachers were travelling, the bus driver lost control, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and tip over onto its side.

The impact resulted in injuries to several students and teachers on board.

The school bus was carrying a total of 51 passengers, including 24 female students, 22 male students, 2 female teachers, and 3 male teachers.

While all the students sustained some injuries, a few individuals were severely affected. Among them is Adaka Lucy, a 20-year-old female student in Senior 4, whose arm became trapped in a bus chair. Additionally, Abura Josephine (19 years, S.4), Kiyonga Angela (20 years, S.4), Atika Simon Peter (21 years, unconscious, S.4), Nagita Angela (19 years, S.4), and one female teacher suffered serious injuries.

Local authorities swiftly responded to the scene, and the victims were promptly transported to Kanyumu Hospital in Pallisa District for medical attention in a police vehicle. The primary suspected cause of the accident is driver fatigue.

At present, efforts are underway to remove the overturned bus, while all injured individuals have been evacuated to nearby healthcare facilities.

Meanwhile, the driver involved in the incident remains at large, prompting a search by the police.

“We are currently conducting a thorough investigation into the school bus accident in Napak District. Our primary focus is on determining the cause of the incident and locating the driver, who is currently at large,” said the Public Relations Officer of Bukedi North Region Police, Superintendent Semewo Samuel.

“Efforts are underway to ensure the swift removal of the bus, and all injured individuals have been taken to nearby healthcare facilities for treatment. We will provide further updates as soon as they become available,” he added.
