NRM registers 18.3m members in party registration exercise

President Yoweri Museveni, who also doubles as the National Chairman of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party has announced that 18.3 million people have been registered in the just concluded party membership registration.

The President revealed this in a brief statement via his official X handle after meeting with the CEC members of the NRM on Thursday evening, at State House Entebbe, saying a large membership of up to 18.3 million was reported, which is a good start to this ongoing process (of party restructuring and internal elections).

“There were some gaps in the process, such as the criminality of money lenders who take away national Identity Cards from Ugandans and the limited involvement of NRM village chairpersons and we have agreed to address those, through legislation if necessary and return to the people at an appropriate time,” Mr Museveni said.

“Despite these gaps, a large membership of up to 18.3m has been reported and I think it is a good start to this ongoing process. I thank NRM members for responding to the program,” he added.

The NRM register update and membership registration process took place between the 13th and 17th March 2024, an exercise that spread all over the 72000 villages across the country.

On February 28, President Museveni said the number of party members had dropped from 17 million to 11 million after an audit discovered 6 million ‘ghosts.’

“After auditing, we have 11.4 million NRM members,” said Museveni during the launch of the update of the party register in Kampala.
