S.5 student commits suicide over forced subjects combination

Kampala, (UG):- Students and teachers of Wampeewo Senior Secondary School in Wakiso District were over the weekend stunned to hear that one of the students identified as Hawa Nantongo committed suicide over her mother forced her to offer science subjects yet the student preferred ARTS subjects.

It’s alleged that Nantongo’s mother was summoned to the school several times to come to a consensus with her daughter Nantongo, 17, a Senior Five who was forced to offer Biology Chemistry and Mathematics (BCM) yet the student wanted to take Divinity, Economics and Luganda (DEL).

One of the students (whose identities are withheld) told this publication that Nantongo was always in tears because of the combination she was.  Claiming was too hard for her and the teachers tried to explain to the mother but all in vain.

Another student who was close to Nantongo said that she was traumatized after her mother introduced her to another man as her Biological father yet she was used to the father whom her mother said was not the real father.

She insisted that the mother was ready to pay for school dues only when Nantongo was offering BCM even if she repeated Senior Six she was ready to pay.

However, it is alleged that on Friday evening, June 7th, 2024, Nantongo who was in a boarding section dodged the school gatekeeper by disguising herself as a day scholar and escaped only to be found hanging on the rope at the nearby wetland area.

Police were yet to release a statement on the incident by the time of filing this story, but Nantongo’s body was conveyed to Mulago mortuary for postmortem as investigations started to establish the actual cause of her death.
