Police hunt for notorious cattle thieves in Budaka

Samuel Semewo confirmed the report

The Bukedi North Regional Police have launched a manhunt for two suspected cattle thieves believed to be operating in Budaka District.

The wanted individuals have been identified as Sisye Munyori Wedumo and his son, Tifayo Mugweri Yolokamu, both residents of Nakibuulu Village in Budaka Town Council.

The investigation was prompted by a report filed by 59-year-old Magama Baruta, a resident of Nakajete Village in Macholi Ward, Budaka Town Council. Baruta reported the theft of three crossbred cows valued at 6,000,000 Ugandan Shillings, which occurred around 5:45 am on June 11, 2024.

“Acting on the complaint, the police deployed their canine unit to the scene. The dogs were able to track the scent from Baruta’s compound, approximately 1 km away, to Budaka Market, where the remains of the slaughtered cows were recovered.

The trail then led the police to Nakibuulu Village, along the Budaka-Iki-Iki Road, where the dogs led them directly to the homes of Munyori and his son, Tifayo. However, the two suspects had managed to escape before the authorities could apprehend them,” said Acting Bukedi North Regional Police Spokesperson SP Semewo Samuel

“Intelligence indicates that these two individuals are known cattle dealers and butchers, and they have long been suspected of being involved in cattle theft, but no one has come forward to report them until now,” added Acting Bukedi North Regional Police Spokesperson SP Semewo Samuel.

Police investigators have documented the scene and recorded witness statements as the search for the two suspects continues.

Cattle theft has been a persistent problem in the Bukedi region, with organized criminal gangs often targeting livestock owned by small-scale farmers.

The Budaka Police told DailyExpress that they are determined to crack down on this criminal activity and bring the suspects to justice.
