Mubende, (UG):- President Yoweri Museveni yesterday awarded a total of 61 Ugandans with national medals recognizing their outstanding role in Uganda’s successful hosting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and G77+ China summits.
The distinguished medalists, including businessman Dr Sudhir Ruparelia and his daughter Sheenah Ruparelia, were recognized at the National Resistance Movement (NRM) 39th Liberation Day celebrations on Sunday, January 26, in Mubende District.
These were awarded under different categories including Distinguished Order of the Crested Crane, Distinguished Order of the Nile, Resolute Star Medal, Distinguished Service Medal, and
Dr Sudhir, the Chairman of Ruparelia Group, a Ugandan conglomerate that owns Speke Resort Convention Centre, Munyoyo was honoured with the Distinguished Order of the Crescent Crane Medal (Grand Officer) for his outstanding service, dedication and contribution to the success of the NAM and G77+China summits.
The facility also hosted the G77+ China summit in the same month, showcasing readiness and lifting Uganda’s image on a global scale.

The Distinguished Order of the Crescent Crane Medal (Grand Officer), which Dr Sudhir took home is awarded to a person who distinguishes him or herself in leadership or service in the public or private sector as a political leader of a local government, an advocate, doctor, engineer, accountant, or a member of a foreign government who contributes to the development of Uganda.
Similarly, Dr Sudhir’s daughter, Sheena Ruparelia was also awarded the 60th Diamond Jubilee Anniversary Medal, recognizing her effort in overseeing the construction of the convention centre to its full completion.
As a Director at the Ruparelia Group, Sheena oversees the group’s hospitality and real estate divisions under the guidance of the Chairman, Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia, and fellow directors. In that role, she leads operations and has been involved in overseeing more than 10 projects.
Her key highlight was the coordination of the project design, procurement and implementation of the Speke Resort Conference Centre for which she was recognized with the national medal.

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, Deputy Premier Rukia Nakadama and Cabinet Secretary Ms Lucy Nakyobe were also awarded the Distinguished Order of the Crested Crane (Grand Commander), a honour awarded to a person who distinguishes him or herself in leadership or service in the public or private sector as a political leader of a local government, an advocate, doctor, engineer, accountant, or a member of a foreign government who contributes to the development of Uganda.
In total, 18 females and 43 males received the national medals awarded under eight categories during the celebrations held at National Teacher’s College in Mubende District.
