Popular hangout, Legends Sports Bar closes after 14 years at Lugogo

The main entrance to Legends Sports Bar at Lugogo, Kampala, which officially annouced its closure on Friday, May 30, following the expiry of its lease. The bar was one of Uganda’s most popular nightlife and sports hubs for over a decade.

Kampala, Uganda: Legends Sports Bar, one of Kampala’s most iconic hangouts and a mainstay in the city’s entertainment and rugby scene, has officially closed after 14 years of operations at Lugogo, a city suburb.

The closure, confirmed by management through a Friday, May 30 public notice, follows the expiry of the bar’s lease agreement at the premises adjacent to the Legends Rugby Grounds. Efforts to renew the lease reportedly hit a dead end, leading to the permanent shutdown of the facility that has for over a decade served as a vibrant hub for sports, hospitality, and Kampala nightlife.

“Following the expiry of our lease at Plot 1 & 3 Sports Lane, Lugogo, Legends is now closed at these premises. We are deeply grateful for 14 unforgettable years of sports, hospitality, and entertainment,” the notice, posted via the Bar’s official X account, read on Friday.

Established in 2012, Legends carved out a reputation as the go-to destination for sports lovers, live music enthusiasts, and partygoers. Its proximity to the rugby grounds made it a cultural nerve centre, hosting countless tournaments, viewing parties, themed events, and celebrations that brought together Kampala’s diverse urban crowd.

Sources close to Legends management revealed that negotiations with the property owners over lease renewal dragged on without resolution, despite strong interest from the proprietors to continue operations. The final decision to exit the premises was made earlier this month, triggering both shock and nostalgia among loyal patrons.

Legend’s closure comes amidst growing concern over the future of Kampala’s nightlife industry, with several other prominent venues, including Gabz Bar, Levels Lounge, and Mevek Lounge, having recently shuttered their operations.

The closure is a significant blow to Uganda’s sports entertainment ecosystem, especially given Legends’ historic link to the local rugby community and its consistent support for youth sports development over the years.

Sector players have cited skyrocketing rents, utility bills, tax pressures, licensing complexities, and shifting consumer patterns among the leading causes of business closures.

But management has hinted at possible future developments under the Legends brand, urging patrons and revellers to stay connected for updates.
