Kiryandongo, Uganda: The aspiring Woman Member of Parliament on the NRM ticket, Ms Atugonza Florence, has revealed that youth unemployment remains a critical challenge in Kiryandongo District, and that the situation has persisted despite growing numbers of educated youth in the area.

Speaking at a public gathering in Bweyale Town Council on Wednesday, June 11, Ms Atugonza said many young people, especially those with university and tertiary qualifications, remain jobless due to limited employment opportunities and rising competition in the job market.

She noted that her parliamentary bid is anchored on addressing key community challenges such as healthcare service gaps, access to quality education for children, and the transformation of the rural economy. She vowed to be a vocal representative if elected to Parliament in the 2026 general elections.

Currently serving as a liaison officer in the Office of the President, Atugonza started her career at the Ministry of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development. Her leadership journey and strong grassroots mobilization skills have earned her support from youth groups, women’s associations, and political mobilisers across the district.

She is also a former member of the United Nations Association of Uganda (UNAU), and during her time at Makerere University Business School, served as Secretary for Gender Equality and Children’s Affairs. While in that position, she led a UNAU-led donation drive to support orphans in Rubaga Division, Kampala.

Atugonza is the co-founder and director of Atugonza Foundation, a charity organization advancing causes related to education, health, and social welfare. Her humanitarian efforts also came into national focus during the COVID-19 pandemic, when she was deployed at Malaba border point in 2020 to oversee cargo clearance and public health protocols.

A teacher and resident of the district, Olanya Francis, described Atugonza as a determined and selfless leader who deserves to represent Kiryandongo in Parliament, citing her national-level contributions and work ethic.

Atugonza urged the people of Kiryandongo to be vigilant during election time and choose leaders with a track record of service. She warned that some contenders are driven by money and personal gain rather than public interest or leadership experience.
