“Better Actress than Musician?” – Ssegawa on Halima Namakula’s 50-year concert

Veteran singer and mentor Halima Namakula performs during her 50-year celebration concert, which drew huge crowds and industry praise.

Kampala, Uganda: Veteran film director John Ssegawa has questioned the basis of celebrated singer Halima Namakula’s recent 50-year milestone in the music industry, arguing that she is more of an actress than a musician.

Speaking shortly after the singer’s successful golden jubilee concert, which drew huge crowds and high-profile support, Ssegawa said the event should have instead honoured Namakula’s contribution as a “studio artiste” or actress, rather than a musical artiste.

“Halima Namakula should have celebrated being a studio artist, not a musical artist. While she marked fifty years, I believe she is a better actor than a musician,” said Ssegawa.

He went on to argue that Halima’s musical output has significantly waned in recent years and that her true legacy lies in her acting rather than in her music.

Despite the criticism, Namakula’s concert drew widespread acclaim, with many in the entertainment industry praising her influence and mentorship over the years. She remains a respected figure who has inspired numerous younger artistes who are now thriving in Uganda’s music scene.
