Kampala, Uganda: Musician and Nakawa Division Mayor aspirant Ali Buken, popularly known as Nubian Li, has been arrested shortly after his nomination on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket, in what opposition leaders describe as a targeted crackdown on the party.
In a video circulating on social media, Nubian Li is seen being roughed up and forced into a police pickup truck as he exited the Electoral Commission offices in Ntinda on Tuesday.
The Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi, condemned the arrest, saying it was a clear sign of fear from the ruling government.
“A short while ago as he exited the Electoral Commission offices in Ntinda after being nominated for the position of Nakawa Mayor, Ali Buken (Nubian Li) was pushed into a police truck and taken to an unknown location. The fear of the regime is evident, let’s press on!” Ssenyonyi posted on X.
The arrest comes barely a day after NUP Deputy Spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro was abducted under unclear circumstances outside Kawempe Magistrate’s Court.
The whereabouts of both figures remain unknown, with security agencies refusing to disclose where they are being held.
