Namayingo, Uganda: A 60-year-old man has been killed by a crocodile at Kamwanga fishing landing site in Lolwe Sub-County, Namayingo District, in yet another fatal attack along the Lake Victoria shoreline.
The deceased, only identified as Mwanje, was reportedly attacked on Thursday evening at around 6:00 pm as he returned home from his garden. According to local leaders, he made a stopover at the water shores to wash his feet when the crocodile struck.
The LC3 Chairperson of Lolwe Sub County, Nyembesa John Bosco, confirmed the incident, describing it as tragic.
“It is very unfortunate that we lost Mwanje, who was washing his feet on the water shore after gardening, before the crocodile jumped onto him and killed him instantly,” Nyembesa said.
He cautioned residents against bathing or washing at the water shores, noting that crocodile attacks are becoming increasingly frequent in the area.
Nyembesa told DailyExpress that Mwanje hailed from Kangulumira in Kayunga District and that his body was transported to his ancestral home for burial scheduled on Saturday.
He revealed that more than 10 people have reportedly lost their lives to crocodile attacks in Namayingo over the past year.
“This is again another incident, with the latest being on February 15, where a woman was killed in a similar manner. There was another case where a cow was attacked,” he said.
The sub-county leader also raised concern over the growing trend of children abandoning school to engage in fishing activities along the water shores, exposing them to similar dangers.
“Schools are now open. I ask parents to take children back to school rather than letting them engage in fishing. There is nothing you can give your child more important than education,” Nyembesa emphasized.
He urged parents to utilize government schools and appealed to authorities to support learners who have completed Senior Four but lack further educational opportunities.
Residents are now calling for increased intervention from wildlife authorities to address the rising crocodile threat in the district.
