Namyalo pushes Muslim SACCOs for empowerment as ONC launches Ramadan charity drive

SPA Hajjat Hadijah Namyalo has urged Muslims in Mukono to form SACCOs and embrace wealth creation as the Office of the National Chairman launched its Ramadan food distribution drive, blending spiritual reflection with economic empowerment and poverty eradication messaging.

Mukono, Uganda: The Manager of the Office of the National Chairman (ONC), SPA Hajjat Hadijah Namyalo Uzeiye, has urged Muslims to form Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisations (SACCOs) as a pathway to financial empowerment through development funding from the government.

Speaking to muslim faithfuls as the office officially launched its Ramadan food distribution campaign in Mukono District on Saturday, Namyalo emphasized that wealth creation must go hand in hand with spiritual devotion during Ramadan.

“Please stop lamenting about poverty year after year. Let us open our eyes and tap into the opportunities around us. Why don’t you form a SACCO and send us, as your leaders, to source additional funding for it? What we need to transform our lives is financial empowerment,” she said.

She encouraged Muslims to take advantage of government poverty eradication programmes, particularly those aligned with Islamic financial principles. Namyalo noted that concerns about interest-based financing were addressed following the launch of Salam Bank in 2024, which operates in line with Sharia-compliant banking.

While commending the Muslim community for its continued support of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, she urged unity, discipline and responsible leadership within the fraternity.

She also cautioned men against entering multiple marriages without the capacity to adequately provide for their families. “Yes, the Qur’an permits it, but it is not a command that you must. If you do not have the capacity, please do not make Allah’s people suffer. Concentrate on the one wife you can support and serve perfectly,” she advised.

At Masjid Atiiq, Namyalo said the ONC Ramadan initiative was designed to support fasting families and demonstrate solidarity during the holy month.

“This initiative is meant to stand with fasting families during Ramadan. As you devote yourselves to prayer and sacrifice, know that you are not alone. The Office of the National Chairman remains committed to supporting communities and promoting unity,” she said.

The outreach exercise began at Masjid Ulama in Kiwanga, Goma Division, and Masjid Noor in Seeta before culminating at Masjid Atiiq in Mukono Town, where hundreds of fasting Muslims received food relief packages.

The distributed packages included wheat flour, rice, sugar and cooking oil, targeting vulnerable households, elderly persons and mosque communities.

Namyalo concluded by urging Muslims to use the Ramadan season to pray for peace, stability and continued socio-economic transformation in Uganda.

The ONC Ramadan outreach campaign is expected to continue across the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area and neighbouring districts in the coming days.
