Pallisa, Uganda: The Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Pallisa, Majid Dhikusooka, has commissioned newly refurbished general wards at Mpongi Health Centre III in Puti-Puti Sub-county, marking a key boost to healthcare access for residents in the district.

The commissioning ceremony brought together senior district leaders, including the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), District Health Officer (DHO), District Engineer, and the LC5 Chairperson.

The refurbishment stems from a 2021/2022 presidential directive by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, which ordered that major government construction and refurbishment works in the health and education sectors be executed by the UPDF Engineering Brigade.

The directive aimed to address persistent challenges associated with private contractors, including project delays, inflated costs, and substandard construction.

Under the arrangement, Pallisa District Local Government awarded a contract worth UGX 105,449,650 to the UPDF Engineering Brigade to refurbish general wards at Mpongi Health Centre III and Kasodo Health Centre.

Although the project timeline targeted completion in 2025, the works at Mpongi Health Centre III were completed ahead of schedule, a development local leaders attributed to the Brigade’s discipline and technical efficiency.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, RDC Dhikusooka praised the UPDF Engineering Brigade for delivering quality work using what he described as “patriotic skilled labour.”

“The government has done its part by providing a high-quality facility through the disciplined efforts of our army,” Dhikusooka said. “I now challenge the community and sub-county leadership to prioritize hygiene and ensure this facility remains clean and well-preserved to serve generations to come.”

The RDC further urged local leaders and residents to take collective responsibility in safeguarding the public investment to ensure it continues to benefit the community.

Officials said the refurbished wards will strengthen healthcare delivery at Mpongi Health Centre III, a critical primary health facility serving thousands of residents across Puti-Puti Sub-county and neighbouring areas.

The project also reflects the government’s growing reliance on the UPDF Engineering Brigade’s construction model, which has been deployed nationwide to accelerate infrastructure development in the health and education sectors.
