One suspect shot dead as police foil armed robbery in Nakawa

During the operation, police recovered a SAR rifle, a bayonet, four smartphones suspected to have been stolen, two black shaving machines, three black jackets, one empty cartridge, a screwdriver, a pair of red canvas shoes, and a black laptop bag.

Kampala City, Uganda: Police patrol officers Tuesday foiled an armed robbery in Ssemwogerere Zone, Nakawa Division, recovering a rifle and several suspected stolen items after one suspect was killed during a pursuit operation.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Sp Rachael Kawala, the incident occurred at about 12:50 a.m. on Tuesday when a businessman and his wife were walking along Mukasa Road and were intercepted by three armed robbers.

The suspects reportedly ordered the couple to stop and lie down before robbing the businessman of his mobile phone and wallet at gunpoint.

Ms Kawala said the robbers then turned their attention to the woman and attempted to take her phone when officers conducting routine motorcycle patrols arrived at the scene.

Upon noticing the police presence, the suspects fled, abandoning a bag containing suspected stolen property and a rifle.

“Police officers immediately pursued the suspects, and during the operation, one unidentified male suspect, believed to be approximately 25 years old, was put out of action,” Ms Kawala said.

During the operation, police recovered a SAR rifle, a bayonet, four smartphones suspected to have been stolen, two black shaving machines, three black jackets, one empty cartridge, a screwdriver, a pair of red canvas shoes, and a black laptop bag.

The body of the deceased suspect was conveyed to Mulago City Mortuary for a postmortem examination.

SP Kawala commended the officers involved in the operation for their swift response, which prevented further harm to the victims and led to the recovery of exhibits believed to be linked to criminal activity.

Investigations are ongoing to identify the deceased suspect and trace the whereabouts of the other suspects who remain at large.
