Kamuli, Uganda: Police in Kamuli District have launched investigations into allegations that the driver of a school bus that crashed and injured 31 students allegedly threatened to deliberately cause the accident before jumping out of the moving vehicle moments before the collision.
The allegations emerged following a viral video circulating on social media and are now part of an ongoing police investigation into the road crash that occurred at Busota Village along the Kamuli–Jinja Road on the night of July 17, 2026.
According to a statement issued by the Busoga North Police Spokesperson, Samson Lubega on Sunday, July 19, the crash occurred at about 9:30 p.m. and involved a Buzaaya Secondary School bus, registration UAZ 463E, and a sugarcane lorry, registration UAB 272W.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the school bus allegedly veered out of its lane before colliding with the oncoming sugarcane truck.
Police said 31 students of Nalongo Secondary School sustained injuries of varying severity during the crash. All the injured students were rushed to nearby health facilities for treatment. No fatalities were recorded.
However, SP Lubega said investigators are examining a video circulating on social media in which the bus driver is allegedly heard threatening to cause a road traffic crash involving the students before reportedly jumping out of the moving vehicle shortly before the collision.
“The authenticity of the video and the circumstances surrounding the incident form part of the ongoing investigations,” he noted.
The police spokesperson said investigators are working to establish the exact sequence of events and determine whether any criminal offences were committed. “Further inquiries are ongoing to establish the exact sequence of events and to determine any criminal liability.”
Lubega urged members of the public to allow investigators time to verify the authenticity of the circulating video and establish the facts surrounding the incident before drawing conclusions.
