RDC Birungi warns LC1 candidates against violence as campaigns begin

Kamuli, Uganda: The Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Kamuli, Rose Birungi, has urged Local Council I (LC1) aspirants to conduct peaceful, issue-based campaigns as village election campaigns officially commenced across the district.

Speaking to journalists at the Kamuli District Headquarters on Monday, Birungi warned candidates against engaging in violence or actions that could disrupt public order ahead of the elections scheduled for July 28, 2026.

She said security agencies have put in place measures to ensure the electoral process remains peaceful before, during and after polling day.

“I am warning all LC1 contestants to keep peace and avoid conflicts. We have put in place tight security and I assure the people of Kamuli that you will be protected during and after the elections. Voters should also avoid wrangles and freely vote for candidates of their choice,” Birungi said.

The RDC called on contestants to focus on presenting their policies and development agendas instead of engaging in confrontational politics.

Aspirants Launch Campaigns

Meanwhile, Hellen Nakisige, an LC1 aspirant for Soroti Zone in Mandwa Ward, Southern Division, Kamuli Municipality, officially launched her campaign at St. Mark Church of Uganda.

Nakisige pledged to promote government programmes and work closely with security agencies to maintain peace and foster development if elected. “My priority is to mobilise people to embrace government programmes and to work with security organs to keep peace and development in Soroti Zone,” she said.

According to the Electoral Commission, campaigns for the village-level elections will run until July 27, ahead of polling on Monday, July 28, 2026.

EC Chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama, said voting will be conducted through the lining-up method, as provided for under Uganda’s electoral guidelines for Local Council elections.
