Kiryandongo, Uganda: Kiryandongo District Woman MP, Hon Jovia Katusiime, has called for increased investment in infrastructure and employment opportunities, saying improved roads and electricity are essential to supporting industrial growth and expanding livelihoods in the district.
The legislator made the remarks during a working visit to Kiryandongo Sugar Limited on Monday, where she met the company’s management to discuss its contribution to employment, local economic development and future expansion plans.
The meeting was attended by the company’s General Manager Dr. Ramesh, Factory Manager J. Murali Sanker, Human Resource Manager Kennedy Atuhwere, and Assistant Resident District Commissioner Natasha Gloria Inasuku.
During the visit, Katusiime toured the factory’s production facilities, where she observed the sugar manufacturing process from cane crushing to sugar refining and packaging.
She also visited value-addition units producing organic manure and other industrial products from by-products, highlighting the company’s investment in waste management and environmental sustainability.
According to the company’s management, Kiryandongo Sugar Limited currently employs about 2,000 workers, making it one of the district’s largest private-sector employers.
The Factory management said the workforce includes residents of Kiryandongo and neighbouring districts, with employment opportunities available in engineering, manufacturing, agriculture and transport.
The company said it continues to recruit professionals and skilled workers, including Mechanical, Electrical and Civil Engineers, Chemists, Welders, Fitters, Machinists, Fabricators, Plumbers, Heavy and light plant auto mechanics, Truck and tractor mechanics, Drivers, and Agricultural personnel involved in field operations, extension services and research.
Hon Katusiime commended the company for creating employment opportunities and contributing to Uganda’s industrialisation agenda. She encouraged young Ugandans to acquire technical and vocational skills that would enable them to benefit from opportunities emerging in the country’s manufacturing sector.
The legislator also reiterated her commitment to following up on President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s pledge to provide a tarmac road and an electricity transformer for Kimogora Village and neighbouring communities.
She said the proposed infrastructure would improve access to social services, lower transport costs and strengthen industrial productivity while creating a more attractive environment for investment.
According to Hon Katusiime, improved road connectivity and reliable electricity would also enhance the operational efficiency of Kiryandongo Sugar Limited and support further job creation.
She emphasised that stronger collaboration between government and the private sector remains critical to accelerating local economic transformation and ensuring surrounding communities directly benefit from major investments.
The visit underscored the growing role of Kiryandongo Sugar Limited as a key employer and contributor to value addition and socio-economic development in the district.
