Lens, France — Italian side Como produced a remarkable Champions League performance on Wednesday night, November 4, 2026, thrashing French club Lens 9-1 to equal the record for the most goals scored by a team in a single match in the competition’s modern era.
Greek striker Anastasios Douvikas scored a hat-trick as Cesc Fàbregas’ side registered their third victory in four league-phase matches, strengthening their position among the leading teams in the competition.
The result also equalled the nine-goal team scoring record set by Bayern Munich when they defeated Dinamo Zagreb 9-2 in September 2024. Como became only the second side to score nine goals in a modern-era Champions League match.
Only two teams had previously won Champions League matches by an eight-goal margin: Liverpool, who beat Besiktas 8-0 in 2007, and Real Madrid, who defeated Malmo by the same scoreline in 2015.
Como’s victory also set a new benchmark for an away team scoring nine goals in the competition, according to match reports.
Douvikas opened the scoring in the seventh minute, finishing from close range after a corner routine. He doubled Como’s advantage in the 32nd minute following a well-worked attacking move involving Nico Paz and Álex Valle.
Paz then made it 3-0 in the 40th minute, firing a powerful shot into the net to give the visitors a commanding advantage at half-time.
Como continued their dominance after the break, with Lucas Da Cunha scoring the fourth goal in the 47th minute before Marc-Oliver Kempf headed in the fifth six minutes later.
Douvikas completed his hat-trick in the 57th minute, taking Como to 6-0 before substitute Mattia Liberali added the seventh in the 62nd minute.
Lens managed a consolation goal through Ruben Aguilar in the 65th minute, but Como were not finished. Martin Baturina scored the eighth in the 69th minute before Matteo Papaccioli completed the rout with a ninth goal in stoppage time.
The emphatic victory continued Como’s impressive European campaign under Fàbregas. The club, which finished fourth in Serie A last season to qualify for the Champions League for the first time, had already recorded a 4-1 home victory over Manchester United and another 4-1 win against RB Leipzig.
After four matches, Como had accumulated nine points and moved into fourth place in the overall league-phase standings, keeping themselves in contention for automatic qualification to the round of 16.
For Lens, the defeat marked a third consecutive loss in the Champions League and their heaviest defeat in the competition. The 9-1 scoreline also represented a record European defeat for a French club.
