50-year-old woman survives lynching for protecting homosexual daughter

KAMPALA, UGANDA: On 13th November 2017, Police in Kulambiro registered a case where angry residents attacked a home belonging to a 50-year-old woman, identified as Aidah Nakalema accusing her of protecting a homosexual daughter who is suspected to be influencing others to join the LGBTQ in the village.

Residents have alleged that Aidah’s daughter known as Mirembe Bridget is a homosexual and has a white “muzungu” woman lover. These angry aggressive residents almost beat up Nakalema at her house in Kulambiro and she was only saved by police.

The angry residents attempted to forcefully find a way to Nakalema’s house to search for Mirembe, the accused.

Mirembe’s mother who was arrested

Kulambiro division police spokesperson ASSP, Ahimbisibwe reliably informed us that Mirembe has been residing in the USA and the villagers had been tipped off that she had returned.

According to police, these residents don’t want Mirembe in the village for fear that he could influence and spread homosexuality in the community.

“Mirembe just arrived in the country yesterday. Kulambiro residents do not want her back in the village. The mother Nakalema insists that she has not seen her daughter or knows her whereabouts at the moment” Asp Ahimbisibwe.

Police say Nakalema is currently at the police station for her protection from the angry villagers and filing her statement.

It is alleged that Mirembe is on record for homosexual acts, one of the residents who couldn’t disclose her Name told police that she is a Facebook friend of Mirembe and this is how she spotted and confirmed that Mirembe had just returned to Uganda from visiting her woman lover in the USA.

“That lady is always putting her photos on her status. I had rumors before about Mirembe’s sexuality but I confirmed for myself that she is gay, not someone I will ever speak to again or want to be associated with” – she said.

Police asked for any information and photos from the residents for more investigation to follow up on the matter.

Another villager informed police that Mirembe and her mother a few years ago had been chased from Kabowa village in the rubaga division over Homosexuality.

Recently, the speaker of parliament Rt. Hon. Alitwala Kadaga called for a new Ant-Homosexuality bill.

The comments were made during a plenary meeting where the members present were discussing the recent distribution of Bombastic Magazine which saw Parliament receive 80 copies of the annual publication.

“There is no bill on Homosexuality, what we need is a new bill after the court nullified the Anti-Homosexuality Act,” Kadaga said of the need to create a policy that criminalizes same-sex relationships as well as gender liquidity.

It has previously been rumored that a new bill was being drafted and would soon be tabled before Parliament but with the speaker’s remarks and persuasion for the bill to be fronted, new fears have arisen as the government will be seeking to prohibit and bring to book anyone who is LGBTI identifying.

Last year while appearing on Capital Radio, Kadaga said, “In 2014, I promised Ugandans that I will give them a Christmas gift by passing the anti-homosexuality bill, which I did. Unfortunately, the bill was annulled by the court after President Yoweri Museveni had assented to it. However, the bill can still be deliberated on in parliament if the movers bring it back to the floor of parliament.
