The National Unity Platform President and former Presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine has been arrested in Kampala on Monday afternoon on accounts of holding an illegal protest.

‘Bobi Wine arrested as he led MPs and other leaders in a peaceful protest against the abduction, torture and murder of his supporters,” an official statement on Twitter said on Monday morning. “The protest was taking place at City Square, Kampala.”

Bobi Wine and a team of NUP leaders, MPs and other supporters were picked up by security at the City Square in Kampala.

The arrested group was reportedly taking part in a “peaceful protest against the abduction, torture and murder of his supporters.

Although Bobi Wine insists his call is for peaceful protests, the security Ministry Gen Elly Tumwine recently warned and said the Kyadondo Eat MP and his supporters are only using the protest as a scapegoat to cause chaos and violence.

“We’re tired, hungry, angry and oppressed; but we still have brains and are non-violent. We chose not to use violence and we are innocent. They cannot outnumber us. I ask you to demonstrate peacefully,” Bobi Wine said in his online address on the March 14.

Bobi Wine had earlier on last week announced country wide protests after declaring that he won with 54.19% in the just concluded elections.

The supporters were called to march to their district offices to express their anger at the way the elections were conducted as well as the subsequent arrest of opposition members.
