Kampala Archbishop Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga dead at 68

The Archbishop of Kampala Archdiocese, His Grace Dr Cyprian Kizito Lwanga is dead, the Catholic Church has said.

Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga was reportedly found dead in his bed on Saturday morning according to Uganda Episcopal Conference Secretary General Msgr John Baptist Kauta.

“With deep sorrow, I hereby inform you that our beloved Shepherd, the Archbishop of Kampala Archdiocese, His Grace Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga has been called to the house of the Lord,” said the Archdiocese Chancellor, Mr. Pius Male Ssentumbwe in a communique released on Saturday afternoon.

“The Archbishop was found dead in his room this morning. We pray that the Almighty and Merciful God may grant him eternal rest.”

“Further arrangements will be communicated later,” he added.

As the chairperson of UJCC, Lwanga decried the continued disappearance of Ugandans, kidnaps and killings, and urged the security agencies to respect human rights. 

He called for more COVID-19 vaccine safety campaigns by Government to encourage Ugandans to take the jabs. 

Lwanga also urged Christian leaders to lead by good example by sowing seeds of justice and peace. 

“We are giving call to all religious leaders. As religious leaders we are called upon to strengthen the spiritual and moral fibre of our nation so that we all lead obedience to God, shun violence, hatred and all other forms of immorality,” he said.

Lwanga was born in January 1953, and has been the Archbishop of Kampala Archdiocese since August 19, 2006.
