8 Kyambogo students arrested for leading protests against e-learning

Police in Kampala has confirmed the arrest of 8 students from Kyambogo University for leading the protests against online learning by the University.

According to the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigire, the strike was organized by guild leaders who mobilized fellow students to participate as a way of showing their dissatisfaction.

The students wanted online learning stopped on allegations that it is too expensive for them to afford. They also demanded that this semester is extended to a later date.

ASP Owoyesigire says that instead, the students turned rowdy prompting officers from Jinja Road Police Station to swing into action to restore normalcy at the University.

“They became unruly but police dispersed them and brought the situation under control and we have managed to arrest eight of these students,” ASP Owoyesigire told this news website.

The arrested students include Kato Eriasa, Kasozi Bright, Namara Claire, Nkurunziza Alphonse, Malingumu Ivan, Ssali Geoffrey, Waiswa Calvin and Mbazira John who have since been charged with inciting violence and are currently detained at Jinja Road Police Station as investigations continue.
