UPDATE: Gen Katumba alive, daughter and driver confirmed dead

Ex-army commander Gen Edward Katumba Wamala today survived an assassination attempt in Kisasi after a vehicle in which he was traveling was shot in a street raid leaving his daughter and driver dead on spot.

According to eyewitnesses, four assailants riding on motorbikes shot at him along Kisota Road in Kisaasi just after 9.00 am.

The unidentified gunmen killed his daughter and bodyguard identified as Brenda Nantongo and Haruna Kayondo respectively.

How it happened

The gunmen reportedly intercepted General Katumba, who was driving in his vehicle registration number H4DF 2138 along Kisasi-Kisota road and sprayed it with bullets.

Katumba was rushed to Malcolm Clinic in Kisaasi where he is receiving treatment.   Detectives have cordoned off the scene to search for any clues on the attack.

The general and his daughter were reportedly heading for the burial of their close relative in Najjanankumbi along Entebbe road.

He had just tweeted this minutes before the shooting incident.

Katumba Wamala is a former head of Police and Uganda army, and is the Minister of Works and Transport.

He was the commander of land forces in the UPDF from 2005 to 2013. He also served as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) of the Uganda Police Force (UPF), the highest rank in that branch of Uganda’s government, from 2001 until 2005.
